Handwriting legibility.
Whether another person can read your page without effort.
What legibility score means
Legibility is a composite. It is not measured on its own but assembled from the factors underneath it, mainly letter formation, spacing, size consistency and character distinction, which together decide how much work a reader has to do.
It is the closest single number to the everyday question of whether handwriting is good, which is why it is worth understanding what it is made of. A legibility score is a summary of the other nineteen results, not an independent judgement.
Why it matters
Legibility is the only handwriting property that has a cost attached to it outside the page. Marks lost on an exam, a prescription misread, a form returned: these are legibility failures, and they are the reason handwriting is worth measuring at all.
Understanding it as a composite also changes how you improve it. There is no drill for legibility. There are drills for the things that produce it.
What a good page looks like
A good page can be read at normal speed by someone who does not know what it says. That last condition is the one people skip when judging their own writing, and it is the only test that counts.
What usually pulls the score down
- Uneven word spacing, which is the most common single cause of low legibility.
- Letters that are individually fine but inconsistent between instances.
- Similar letter pairs that have collapsed into each other.
- Size and baseline drift accumulating down a long page.
How to practise it
Work on your two lowest factors, not on legibility. Because it is a composite, it rises when its inputs rise, and the inputs are specific enough to practise. Spacing and size consistency are the usual highest-value pair.
Then test it properly. Give a page to someone who has not seen the text and ask them to read it aloud. The places they stumble are the factors to work on next, and they are frequently not the ones the writer expected.
The drill the report prescribes
Lift your two lowest factors first: legibility rises with them.
How Vahini measures it
A scanned page gives the analyser the finished writing, not the movement that produced it, so this factor is read from composite readability and reported as such. The Vahini pen senses the movement directly, which is the difference between inferring how a page was written and recording it.
Questions
What is a good legibility score?
The useful threshold is behavioural rather than numerical: can a stranger read the page at speed without backtracking. The analyser reports a number so you can track change over time, and the direction matters more than the value.
Can neat handwriting still be illegible?
Yes, and it is common. Very neat, very small, very evenly spaced writing with poorly distinguished letters is tidy and hard to read at the same time.
See this factor in your own handwriting
The analyser scores a photo of a handwritten page on all twenty factors, names the two worth working on first, and prescribes the drills for them. It is free, it needs no pen, and it is an educational tool rather than a medical assessment.
