What slant consistency means
Slant is the angle your letters lean from vertical. This factor measures how much that angle varies across the page, not what the angle is.
Upright, forward-leaning and backward-leaning hands can all score full marks. What loses points is a page where some words lean forward, some stand upright, and the angle changes without a reason.
Why it matters
Consistent slant is a large part of what makes a page look deliberate. Of all twenty factors it is one of the strongest drivers of whether writing is described as tidy, because the eye reads angle variation as carelessness.
Inconsistent slant also blurs letters that depend on their angle to be distinct, and it interacts with vertical alignment, so the two usually need fixing together.
What a good page looks like
A good page has one angle. Held at arm’s length, the letters lean together like a row of fence posts, whether that lean is 0 degrees or 20. The angle at the bottom of the page matches the angle at the top.
What usually pulls the score down
- Paper square to the desk rather than angled to the writing arm, which is the single most common cause.
- The hand rotating through the line instead of sliding.
- Copying a slanted model without having settled a natural angle.
- Fatigue, which usually increases the lean towards the end of a page.
How to practise it
Rule a sheet with parallel guide lines at your natural angle and write along them for a page. This works better than trying to hold an angle by feel, because it gives the eye something to check against continuously.
Fix the paper position at the same time. Angling the sheet so it faces the writing arm, roughly 20 to 30 degrees for most people, lets the natural movement of the hand produce a consistent slant instead of fighting one.

Is there a correct handwriting slant?
No. Consistency is what is measured and what readers respond to. Left-handed writers often settle on a different angle from right-handed writers and score just as well.
Does slant reveal personality?
