Factor 19 of 20 · Style and readability

Character distinction in handwriting.

Whether letters that could be confused with each other stay clearly different.

What character distinction means

Character distinction measures the separation between letters that are structurally similar. The classic pairs are a and o, n and h, r and v, i and e, and in numbers 1 and 7, 0 and 6.

It is different from letter formation. Formation asks whether your a is consistently your a; distinction asks whether your consistent a is far enough from your consistent o for a reader to tell them apart.

Why it matters

This factor has the highest cost per error of the twenty. Most handwriting faults slow a reader down. A collapsed letter pair changes what the page says, and the reader may never notice they read it wrong.

That matters most where the text cannot be inferred from context: numbers, names, codes, dosages. In continuous prose a reader recovers from an ambiguous letter using the sentence. In a phone number they do not.

What a good page looks like

A good page keeps at least one unmistakable difference in every confusable pair: the a closed where the u is open, the h clearly taller than the n, the 7 crossed or the 1 serifed. The difference is visible in isolation, without the word around it.

What usually pulls the score down

  • Speed flattening the feature that distinguished the pair.
  • A personal letter style that happens to sit between two letters.
  • Loops left open, which is what turns a into u.
  • Short ascenders, which is what turns h into n.

How to practise it

Write the confusable pair side by side, repeatedly, and exaggerate whatever separates them until the difference is unmistakable. Then reduce the exaggeration until it is merely clear. Do this only for the pairs your own writing actually confuses.

For numbers, adopt the conventions that exist for exactly this reason: a crossed seven, a slashed zero, a one with a base. They are not decoration, they are error correction, and they matter anywhere a number will be read by someone who cannot check it.

The drill the report prescribes

Practise easily-confused pairs side by side until each is unmistakable.

How Vahini measures it

A scanned page gives the analyser the finished writing, not the movement that produced it, so this factor is read from character separability proxy and reported as such. The Vahini pen senses the movement directly, which is the difference between inferring how a page was written and recording it.

Questions

Which letter pairs cause the most trouble?

In English hands, a and o, n and h, r and v, and among digits 1 and 7. Which pairs matter in your writing depends on your letter shapes, which is what the per-page report identifies.

Why does this matter more than neatness?

Because it is the only factor that can change the meaning of the page rather than the speed of reading it.

The analyser scores a photo of a handwritten page on all twenty factors, names the two worth working on first, and prescribes the drills for them. It is free, it needs no pen, and it is an educational tool rather than a medical assessment.
