What overall neatness means
Neatness is a page-level composite. It combines the layout factors, mainly margins, line straightness, spacing regularity and size consistency, into a measure of how orderly the sheet looks as an object.
It is deliberately separate from legibility. Legibility is about reading the words; neatness is about the impression the page makes before reading starts. The two often move together and they are not the same thing.
Why it matters
Neatness is what a reader judges in the first second, and in any setting where writing is marked by a person, that first second colours what follows.
It is also the most improvable of the composites, because its inputs are layout decisions rather than motor skills. Margins, line spacing and word gaps are choices, and choices change faster than habits do.
What a good page looks like
A good page has a straight left edge, parallel lines, even gaps between words, letters of consistent size, and no crossings out. Turned upside down, so the words are unreadable, it still looks organised. That is the test this factor is closest to.
What usually pulls the score down
- Uneven margins and drifting lines, which dominate the impression.
- Corrections and strike-throughs, which the eye finds before anything else.
- Size growing down the page as the hand tires.
- Cramped line spacing, so descenders collide with the line below.
How to practise it
Start with layout rather than with letters. A ruled margin, wider line spacing and a deliberate word gap will change a neatness score more in one page than a month of letter drills, because those are the inputs it is built from.
Then deal with corrections. Writing a little more slowly to avoid needing them costs less time than the corrections themselves and leaves a page that looks considered.
