Loop closure in handwriting.

Whether the letters with an enclosed space actually enclose it.

What loop closure means

Several letters are defined by a hole. The counter of an a, the bowl of a b, the eye of an e: in each case the enclosed space is what separates that letter from another one. Loop closure is the share of those letters where the space is genuinely closed.

An open loop does not read as a slightly imperfect letter. It reads as a different letter. An a left open at the top is a u, an e with a filled or unclosed eye is an i or a blot, and the reader has to work backwards from the word to recover what you meant.

Why it matters

This is the factor with the worst ratio of small cause to large effect. The gap that turns an a into a u can be under a millimetre, and the cost is a word the reader has to decode instead of read.

It is also one of the fastest to improve. Unlike slant or speed, closure is a single conscious act at a single point in the letter, so attention converts to score quickly.

What a good page looks like

A good page closes essentially every loop that should be closed and leaves open the ones that should be open. The counters stay visible as well: a loop crushed shut with ink is as hard to read as one left open, because the letter loses the hole that identifies it.

What usually pulls the score down

  • Speed, by a wide margin. The closing stroke is the last part of the letter and the first thing dropped.
  • A ballpoint that skips, so the ink is missing even though the movement happened.
  • Writing small enough that the counter fills in with ink.
  • Fatigue late in a long page.

How to practise it

Rows of round letters, written slowly, checking that each counter is both closed and open in the middle. Lines of o and lines of a are the standard drill for this and they work, mostly because they force attention onto the one point in the letter where the error happens.

Then check a normal page of your own writing rather than the drill. Closure practised in isolation transfers well, but the score that matters is the one on ordinary writing at ordinary speed.

The drill the report prescribes

Loop drills: rows of oooo and aaaa keeping every counter closed.

How Vahini measures it

A scanned page gives the analyser the finished writing, not the movement that produced it, so this factor is read from loop-bearing character consistency and reported as such. The Vahini pen senses the movement directly, which is the difference between inferring how a page was written and recording it.

Questions

Is an open loop a sign of a problem?

Usually it is a sign of speed. Persistently open loops in a child who is writing slowly and carefully are worth mentioning to a teacher, but on their own they are a handwriting habit rather than anything more.

My loops are closed but filled in. Is that better?

No. The analyser looks for a visible counter, because that hole is what distinguishes the letter. A filled loop and an open loop cost the reader about the same.

See this factor in your own handwriting

The analyser scores a photo of a handwritten page on all twenty factors, names the two worth working on first, and prescribes the drills for them. It is free, it needs no pen, and it is an educational tool rather than a medical assessment.
