Line quality and stroke smoothness.

How smooth each stroke is along its length.

What line quality (smoothness) means

Line quality is about the stroke rather than the letter. A confident stroke has one continuous curvature: it goes where it is going without correcting itself. A poor one wobbles, shows small tremors, or changes direction in tiny steps that were not intended.

It is visible on any long stroke, which is why the stem of a l or the descender of a y gives it away faster than a short letter does. On a scan the analyser measures it as the amount of deviation from the smooth path the stroke was aiming at.

Why it matters

Smoothness is the closest thing a still page has to a record of how the writing felt. A page written by a hand that is relaxed and moving from the shoulder and elbow looks different from one written by a hand gripping tightly and drawing from the fingers, and the difference shows in the strokes long before it shows in the letters.

It also predicts endurance. Writing that is smooth for a paragraph and rough by the end of the page is telling you about grip and tension, which is a more useful thing to fix than any individual letter.

What a good page looks like

A good stroke is drawn, not sketched. Long strokes are unbroken and evenly curved, edges look clean at normal reading distance, and the last line of the page looks like the first. Perfectly straight is not the target; consistent is.

What usually pulls the score down

  • Gripping the pen too hard, which is the most common cause by a distance.
  • Drawing letters with the fingers alone rather than moving the whole hand.
  • Writing on a soft or uneven surface, or on a single sheet with nothing underneath.
  • A pen that needs pressure to write, which forces tension into the hand.

How to practise it

Rows of long vertical strokes and rows of open curves, written slowly and deliberately, are the standard control drill. Do them with an unusually loose grip, loose enough that it feels like the pen might slip, because almost everyone who has a line quality problem is holding on harder than the pen needs.

Change the pen as well. A pen that lays ink down with no force at all removes the reason to press, and for many writers that single change does more for smoothness than any amount of practice.

The drill the report prescribes

Straight-line and curve control drills: llll then cccc, slowly.

How Vahini measures it

A scanned page gives the analyser the finished writing, not the movement that produced it, so this factor is read from stroke smoothness proxy and reported as such. The Vahini pen senses the movement directly, which is the difference between inferring how a page was written and recording it.

Questions

Does shaky handwriting mean something medical?

Not by itself. Grip tension, cold hands, a bad pen and an unsupported writing surface explain most of it. A tremor that is new, getting worse, or present when the hand is at rest is worth a doctor rather than a handwriting drill; this analysis is not a medical assessment.

Why is my writing smooth at the start and rough at the end?

That pattern points at grip and fatigue rather than technique. Loosening the grip and moving from the elbow rather than the fingers is what changes it.

The analyser scores a photo of a handwritten page on all twenty factors, names the two worth working on first, and prescribes the drills for them. It is free, it needs no pen, and it is an educational tool rather than a medical assessment.
