What pressure consistency means
Pressure consistency measures how evenly you press the pen into the paper. On a scan it is read from ink density and stroke weight: heavy pressure lays down darker, thicker strokes, and pressure that varies shows as weight that changes within a line.
It is one of the few factors where the absolute level matters as well as the consistency. Very heavy pressure is a problem in itself, because of what it does to the hand rather than to the page.
Why it matters
Pressure is the main reason handwriting hurts. A hand pressing far harder than the pen requires is doing sustained isometric work, and that is what produces cramp, fatigue and writing that falls apart after twenty minutes.
It also degrades other factors as it goes. A tight hand produces rougher strokes and less accurate letters, so pressure often shows up indirectly as a line quality or formation problem.
What a good page looks like
A good page has even stroke weight throughout, at a level where the writing is clearly legible without showing through the sheet. You should be able to write for a page without the hand aching, and the back of the paper should be smooth.
What usually pulls the score down
- A pen that needs force to write, particularly a dry or cheap ballpoint.
- Gripping close to the tip, which converts grip force into downward force.
- Concentration, which for many writers translates directly into pressing harder.
- Being taught to write firmly, which is common and rarely helpful.
How to practise it
Write a line at your normal pressure, then write the same line trying to make the lightest mark that is still readable. Alternate them. Most writers discover their normal pressure is several times what the pen needs, and the light version is perfectly legible.
Change the pen too. A rollerball or fountain pen writes under its own weight, which removes the incentive to press and does more for a heavy hand than any drill.

Questions
Does heavy pressure mean anything about personality?
Graphology says so. There is no reliable evidence for it and Vahini makes no such claim. Pressure is reported as a motor-control and comfort measurement.
My hand hurts when I write. Is pressure the cause?
It is the most common cause, along with grip position. If lightening the pressure and changing the pen does not help, that is worth raising with a doctor or occupational therapist rather than treating as a handwriting habit.
