Factor 6 of 20 · Structure

Ascenders and descenders.

Whether tall letters stand tall and tails hang properly below the line.

What ascender / descender control means

Handwriting occupies three zones. The middle zone holds letters like a and o. The upper zone holds the ascenders, the tall parts of b, d, h, k, l and t. The lower zone holds the descenders, the tails of g, j, p, q and y.

This factor measures the balance between them. It asks whether the tall letters are actually taller by a consistent proportion and whether the tails actually drop below the baseline, rather than whether any individual letter is the right size.

Why it matters

Zone contrast is a large part of what makes a word recognisable at a glance. Readers identify short words partly by their outline, and a page where ascenders are barely taller than the middle zone flattens every word into the same rectangle.

It is also what separates letter pairs that are otherwise similar. An h whose ascender is too short starts to look like an n, and a y whose tail does not descend starts to look like a v.

What a good page looks like

On a good page the tall letters are clearly taller, by roughly the same proportion each time, and every descender crosses the baseline. Words have varied outlines. You can tell hand from nand without reading the letters.

What usually pulls the score down

  • Writing on narrow ruled paper that gives the ascender no room.
  • Cramping the lower zone so tails stop at the line instead of crossing it.
  • Writing quickly, which tends to shorten the extremes first.
  • Descenders from one line colliding with the line below, so they get shortened deliberately.

How to practise it

Alternating tall and short patterns are the direct drill for this: a repeated pair such as b l b l, then the same with a descender, written so the proportion is deliberate rather than accidental. Aim for the ascender being clearly taller rather than for any exact ratio.

If tails are colliding with the next line, the fix is line spacing rather than practice. Wider ruled paper gives the lower zone somewhere to go, and the letters stop being compressed to avoid the crash.

The drill the report prescribes

Tall-short pattern drills (bl bl bl) to train ascenders and descenders.

How Vahini measures it

A scanned page gives the analyser the finished writing, not the movement that produced it, so this factor is read from zone balance and reported as such. The Vahini pen senses the movement directly, which is the difference between inferring how a page was written and recording it.

Questions

What is the x-height?

The height of a lower-case letter with no ascender or descender, such as x, a or o. Most of the size and zone factors are measured relative to it, because it is the one height that appears on every line.

Do capitals count as ascenders?

They occupy the upper zone but are measured separately. A page can have consistent capitals and still score poorly if the lower-case ascenders are short.

The analyser scores a photo of a handwritten page on all twenty factors, names the two worth working on first, and prescribes the drills for them. It is free, it needs no pen, and it is an educational tool rather than a medical assessment.
