The refill is the product's spine
Every sensor pen faces one early fork: invent a proprietary ink cartridge shaped around your electronics, or accept a standard refill and shape your electronics around it. The proprietary route gives designers freedom and gives users a lifetime obligation to buy your ink. We took the other road. A standard slim refill runs straight through the pen's core, and every board and sensor is arranged around that reserved cylinder.
What a century of refills already solved
The standard refill formats are not arbitrary. They encode a hundred years of quiet optimisation: ink chemistry that flows at handwriting speeds without blobbing, tip geometry that works at the angles real hands hold pens, lengths and diameters that balance well. When you adopt the standard, you inherit all that solved engineering for free. When you invent your own, you have to re-solve it, and users can tell when you get it wrong.
Supply chains matter more than specs
A child in a small town who loses ink mid-homework should be able to walk to the nearest shop and fix that for a few rupees. No courier, no app, no waiting. That is only possible with a format the whole stationery industry already stocks. It also means our manufacturing never depends on a single ink supplier, which keeps the pen's price honest.
The constraint that disciplined the electronics
Reserving the core for ink forced every electronic component to fit the thin annular space around it, and the engineering got better for it. Boards became narrower, parts were chosen for size as well as ability, and the pen stayed a pen. Constraints you choose early shape everything downstream, and this is the one we would choose again first.
Key takeaways
- The pen uses a standard slim ballpoint refill, available in any stationery shop.
- Standard formats carry a century of solved ink and ergonomics engineering.
- Local availability keeps the running cost near zero and removes supply-chain risk.
- Designing around the refill disciplined the electronics and kept the pen pen-sized.
The cleverest part of a smart pen can be the part with no electronics in it at all.
